A highly committed mayor
Jean-Yves Noyrey, local from Oz, was twice elected municipal councillor in the area where he grew hup. He became mayor of Huez in 2009.
First a ski instructor, he was promoted to the position of director of the EFS (French ski shcool) and joined the Huez town council in 2001. Committed and invested, Jean-Yves Noyerey is also a member of the instructor's union management committee and the French ski Federation, regional councillor, and vice-president of the "communauté des communes", in charge of mobility.
Alpe d'Huez was a popular resort in the 70s, but faced with the decline in visitors in the 90s, for two decades the resort has been striving to develop, diversify and enhance its accommodation offer, always in compliance with the "Zero Net artificialisation" law. A project masterfully led by the mayor. As one of the largest ski areas in France with 220 kilometres of slopes in Europe, the legendary 17-kilometre long Sarenne. The bottom of the resort is positioned at 1860 metres of altitude, guaranteeing remarkable snow cover. Its microclimate and proximity to the Southern Alps allows Alpe d'Huez to benefit from an exceptional more than 300 days of sunshine a year, deserving its nickname, the island of the Sun (Île au Soleil).
Beyond having become an essential destination for both winter and summer sports with its wide range of activities, Alpe d'Huez stands out from other resorts with many events each year. Every January, the resort hosts the comedy film festival, the Tommorrowland winter in March and the comics festival in April. "Tomorrowland, which brings together nearly 20,000 festival-goers each edition, brings our resort great visibility and an international reputation!" says Jean-Yves Noyrey.
The summer period is also rich in events, such as Alpe d'Uzes, the La Marmotte cycling race or the Mégavalanche mountain bike race. Whether it is triathlons, the Tour de France, golf, chess, bridge competitions or the Fête de l'Air, cultural and sporting events have multiplied over the years. All these assets add to the attractiveness of the resort, now presented as one of the best tourist destinations in France thanks to its energy and its ability to adapt. With 1,300 souls living there year-round, "We offer a high-quality ski area with extremely efficient ski lifts, an exceptional natural setting and a singular and high-end catering and hotel offer", assures the Mayor.
It is this virtuous momentum aimed at always re-energising the area that Jean-Yves intends to distill into the surrounding massifs: Grandes Rousses, Oisans and Deux-Alpes
